Five unmissable performances at 51st State Festival

A kaleidoscope of classic sounds are set for the 7th August

51st State returns to North London on 7th August for a special sixth edition, with music spanning UKG, classic house, disco, gospel, acid, and more. From 11:00 – 22:00, ravers will dance to a soundscape celebrating the rich musical heritage of the scene, as well as the next generation of artists making their mark in the industry.

With such an eclectic and diverse line up, it’s going to be one of those events where there’s no shortage of excellent music on offer. Even just wandering around the festival, you’re bound to find something to tickle your fancy. But, here’s five performances we won’t be missing.

1. Masters at Work

Legendary New York duo Masters at Work never fail to bring the party. Made up of “Little” Louie Vega and Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez, each stand out artists in their own right, these guys are famed for some of the best remixes and original productions in the classic house scene. With hundreds of productions to their name, they’ve amassed an enviable body of work,  remixing for artists like Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson. Madonna, Donna Summer, and Jamiroquai, and even reached the US Dance Singles #1 in 1993 with their anthem “I Can’t Get No Sleep”. 

2. Body & Soul

Body & Soul, founded in 1996 by François K. and John Davis as a Sunday afternoon party in New York quickly became one of New York’s most revered weekly parties. Hosted by three DJs, Danny Krivit, Joaquin ‘Joe’ Claussell and François K, they bring a unique soulful mix of groove, funk, and vibes. It’s rare to catch these guys playing together, and definitely not one to miss!

3. Roger Sanchez (Classic House Set)

Another New York native, Roger Sanchez epitomises the 4-deck wizard. Known for effortlessly blending multiple records at the same time, he’s one of the most prolific and creative artists touring. He won a Grammy Award for his remix of “Hella Good” by No Doubt in 2003, and is best known for his song “Another Chance”, which was an international hit in 2001 and just got remastered to celebrate it’s 20th anniversary. What’s more, he is a four time DJ Awards winner for “Best House DJ” in 1999, 2002, 2004 and 2007. 

4. House Gospel Choir – Live

If you want hands in the air, clapping, soulful singing vibes, then the House Gospel Choir is where to be. Their shows bring together a group of outstanding singers, a full house band and DJ, creating an effortless live fusion of the biggest house and gospel tunes that never fail to raise the roof! The current choir has over 150 members, so you can expect a unique and uplifting energy.

5. Dave Lee 

One of the most famed UK house and disco producers/DJs with a career that’s spanned over 20 years. Previously known as Joey Negro, he’s had a slew of hits including “Make A Move On Me”, as well as four top 40 hits under the production name Jakatta. He’s also the owner of influential label Z Records, releasing outstanding house and disco. Expect a groove fuelled odyssey of sound at his set.
