Interview

Catching Up With: Crvvcks

The respected UK artist has released on Solotoko, Musical Freedom and 3 Beat

Meet Crvvcks (pronounced Crooks), the emerging British producer and DJ whose infectious blend of chord-driven melodies and club-ready energy has taken the electronic music scene by storm. A man with support from industry heavyweights such as Tïesto, Martin Garrix and DJ SKT to note a few, his momentum is not slowing down.

As well as massive support from peers, his music has become a hit with fans, amassing 30 million streams on Spotify. Following his latest single “One More Time”, we caught up with with Crvvks to talk about must-have production plugins, special methods for finding music and the stories behind some of his biggest hits.

Hey Crvvcks, thanks for sitting down with us. Let’s start at the very beginning and get to know your story. Were there any experiences you had growing up that inspired your musical journey?

Yeah, there are a few actually. One of my earliest memories is from my first ever gig. Back then, “Crvvcks” was actually a duo with a school friend. We were only 16 or 17 when we played our first show in London. At the time, we were making much more chilled music, but that trip down to London really sparked my love for house music. It was during that golden era between 2012 and 2014 when house music was everywhere and it just hit different.

Where does the name “Crvvcks” come from?

Yeah, so like I said, “Crvvcks” started out as a duo. Me and my mate were trying to come up with names and we really liked the word Crooks, but it was impossible to find on Google. So we swapped the O’s for V’s to make it stand out. We were also huge fans of Mount Kimbie at the time, and their album Crooks & Lovers definitely influenced the name too.

You’ve released on some prestigious labels such as Solotoko, Musical Freedom and 3 Beat. When producing music, do you start with the label in mind first, or just let the creative juices flow and find a home retrospectively?

I usually write tracks with a specific label in mind, but sometimes an idea just takes over and I let it run wild. “Palms” is a perfect example. I had just been fired from my job and bought a new plant to lift my spirits. With that free time and new energy, I wrote the track, naming it after the plant. It’s now my most played track on Spotify.

Is there any particular equipment or plug ins that are an absolute must for you in the studio?

Oszillos Meg Scope – I recently bought it and I swear by it! Allows you to visually see your mix in real time, great plugin!

You’ve been releasing a plethora of music since 2013. How do you approach evolving your sound with the latest trends whilst staying true to your own style?

I think it’s all about the passion you have for music. 2013 is a long time and I still also feel like I’m learning!

How do you go about finding music for your sets? Are there any special methods you have?

It can come from anywhere, I really like to crate digs. I think it’s always great to listen to other sets to as it helps get inspiration.

Do you have any dream venues on your hit list that you’d love to headline in the future?

I would love to play Glastonbury one day!

If you could collab with any artist in the world, who would it be?

It would be MJ for sure.

Your released a club banger in April this year titled “Ain’t Giving Up”, talk us through the story of this release.

This one’s been on a bit of a journey. I first worked on it with the insanely talented Annaca back in 2023. My label at the time liked it, but felt it wasn’t quite the right fit. I ended up creating a second version, which we tested out, but that one didn’t make the cut either. The version that’s out now? That’s version 3. Safe to say, this track really lived up to its name!

Your latest release “One More Time” is a bouncy, future classic. How did you find the process of creating this track?

Had a blast making this one with my good friend Clear Six. We’ve written loads of tracks together and this one came together super naturally. He played me a bunch of ideas he had been working on and we locked into something pretty quickly. We wrapped it up in just a few weeks.

Finally, what’s your favourite track by another artist that you wish you’d made?

It would be Disclosure – Who Knew?. That track is insane. The production is on another level. I remember when ENERGY dropped, I couldn’t stop listening to it.
