Anané; singer, DJ, artistic visionary, and the creative mind behind Nulu Music label has released her highly anticipated ‘Take A Ride‘ EP on Nervous Records. Crafted by Two Soul Fusion, AKA Louie Vega and Josh Milan, this mini-album features six tracks, all of which have been enhanced by live string arrangements from the Apple Hill String Quartet conducted by Leroy Burgess.
The EP transitions through sounds of punk disco, to the captivating currents of jazz funk before leaning back into the embrace of italo-disco, all complemented by Anané dreamy vocals which unify the EP.
The first two singles ‘Let Me Be Your Fantasy‘ and ‘High‘, are a clear nod to early 80s sounds of rock, punk and disco – a fusion which became synonymous with NYC. Both tracks feature slick percussion and groove-laden basslines, with Let Me Be Your Fantasy incorporating soaring string sections peppered amongst the percussion and bass. Meanwhile while High captivates the listener from the get go and is accompanied by a nostalgic funk-fuelled, disco-era themed music video which you can view below.
Diving further into the groove, Anané guides us into the free-spirited realm of jazz funk with the single ‘Coffy Is The Color‘. This nine-minute journey track builds in energy and pace with various instruments bouncing around the mix, all underpinned by Anané’s distinct vocal.
Slowing things down, we move into italo-disco section of the EP with ‘Tutto Previsto‘. A sensual funk-filled number which pays homage to Anané’s love for Italy.
Serving as a tribute to the original production of Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, Michael Gray’s Dub Mix of ‘Get On The Funk reaffirms disco’s undeniable timelessness with knee-jerking rhythms intertwining with crisp percussion and shimmering strings.
The EP concludes with an experimental instrumental track entitled ‘Disco Punk Demo.’ A more stripped back cut, which features Latin guitar strumming patterns and subtle bass notes, transcending us to the end of the EP.
