Track Talk: Pumping progressive techno from Genix

Warehouse 55 (Volume 2) is out now on Anjunabeats

British DJ and Producer Genix is a legend in the trance scene, having started as a resident and promoter for the renowned UK show Passion in the 90s, and taking his signature sound around the world since his debut release in 2003. A mainstay of the inimitable Anjunabeats, Genix has released on a myriad of world-class labels like Armind, Vandit, Enhanced, and Reset Records.

With over 100+ releases in his discography and no desire to water down his sound in order to reach more commercial audiences, Genix has a distinguished reputation in the dance scene. He’s released over 20 originals and remixes on Above & Beyond’s acclaimed labels, cementing his status among DJs and ravers alike.

At one point Genix held the Guinness World Record for the longest DJ set in history, clocking in at 84 hours, and recently broke the world record for playing a DJ set at the highest recorded altitude, performing at Mount Everest Base Camp 5,600 metres above sea level!

His latest EP ‘Warehouse 55 (Volume 2)’ on Anjunabeats is a contemporary 3 track progressive techno masterpiece. Having collaborated with Dosem on ‘Day City’ and Night City’, and solo track ‘Accelerator’, he demonstrates his intricate knowledge of sound design and what gets people moving on the dance floor.

Speaking on how Night City was made, Genix said:

For the main acid in ‘night city’ was inspired by that classic acid 303 sound made famous by artists like Josh Wink and a track I love called ‘Maurice Joshua – this is acid’ I find this era of electronic music totally fascinating, it was where it was born. It defined a generation, culture and made electronic music what it is today.

So the acid lines in the Dosem collabs were made with hardware ‘Behringer TD-3’ which is a clone of the Roland 303 synth. All of the automatic was recorded manually! Which makes it more fun from the production side of things. Also the Roland 303 software synth was used for additional acid sounds.

The drums are also inspired from that era, with those classic distorted 16th note hats it really has almost a quite basic but very unique sound. I think sound selection is absolutely essential these days to make your records stand out and be some what unique. Even selecting certain hi hats can give your music some different uniqueness!

The stab sounds I absolutely love and use them a lot in my productions. Maybe let’s call it the rave stab which is created using a note, with another note an octave above and one 3 notes (semi tones) higher.

Again this is all about using character, getting the decay correct and compression. You can use plug ins like ‘rave generator’ for this or make them yourself. There are tones of sounds on splice & loopcloud available and for ease it’s sometimes easy to use those. Think inner city – good life.. those kind of sounds. What an era that was! It reminds me of my childhood. The time I fell in love with electronic music .

Warehouse 55 (Volume 2) is a true dance floor EP. ‘Day City’ brings lucious, uplifting chords, with a driving bassline and precise drums, creating an ethereal daytime experience. ‘Night City’ is a fantastic homage to the classic acid sound, utilising the same base as ‘Day City’, but turning it into a late hours dance floor destroyer. The pumping rhythm commands the track, leaving you with nothing else to do but let loose and dance!

The solo track ‘Accelerator’ goes up a gear, with a gritty synth line, thumping kick, and mysterious vocals. The melancholic melody briefly provides some respite before you’re dropped back into the mayhem.
